Church School

Church School classes meet at 9:30 AM on Sundays throughout the program year (September – May). Trained teachers use the Godly Play curriculum for older pre-school children through 5th grade in three separate classes. Godly Play teaches the art of using Christian language — parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action – to become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence.

The Mission of Godly Play: Making meaning through story, wonder, and play. Nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children. To learn more – Godly Play: https://www.godlyplayfoundation.org

GODLY PLAY @ christ church

What is Godly Play?

Godly Play is taught at Christ Church for our older preschool – 5th-grade children. The class is located on the second floor. Presently, for the protection of our children, everyone entering our Children & Youth Program area is required to wear a mask.

Making meaning through story, wonder, and play. Nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children. To learn more, please visit the Godly Play site.

Children’s Chapel

Children from preschool through 4th grade are invited to participate in Children’s Chapel during the first half of the 10:30 AM Sunday Worship Service. The children work together to set the altar and light the candles. Chapel begins with an opening sentence and group prayer. Individual prayer concerns are shared. Children sing and, if time allows, they hear and talk about the Gospel lesson for the day before a closing prayer. About the time that adults are “Passing the Peace” in worship, the children rejoin the service – hopefully in time to say “and also with you!”

*All teachers, volunteers, and staff are required to complete our Diocese’s Safeguarding God’s Children prior to working and our children and youth at Christ Church. Learn more: https://www.dioswva.org/resources/safeguarding-program.html
